Shea butter or Shea nut butter is a slightly yellowish or ivory-colored natural fat extracted from fruit of the shea tree by crushing and boiling. Shea butter is widely used in cosmetics as a moisturizer and an emollient. Shea butter is also edible. It is used as a cooking oil in West Africa, as well as sometimes being used in the chocolate industry as a substitute for cocoa butter.

The shea or karite tree, formerly Butyrospermum paradoxum, is now called Vitellaria paradoxa. It produces its first fruit (which resemble large plums) when it is about 20 years old and reaches its full production when the tree is about 45 years old. It produces nuts for up to 200 years after reaching maturity.

Properties

Shea butter is known especially for its cosmetic properties as a moisturizer and emollient. It is also a known anti-inflammatory agent. Shea butter is marketed as being effective at treating the following conditions: fading scars, eczema, burns, rashes, acne, severely dry skin, blemishes, dark spots, skin discolorations, chapped lips, stretchmarks, wrinkles, and in lessening the irritation of psoriasis. Shea butter provides natural ultravioletsun protection, although the level of protection is extremely variable, ranging from nothing to approximately SPF 6. Shea butter absorbs rapidly into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling. In Nigeria, it is known to be very effective in the management of sinusitis and relief of nasal congestion. This is due to its emollient properties which helps in relaxing the tension in the face skin thus easing respiration. All one needs do, if one has sinus problems or congestion, is rub a considerable amount of the butter in and around the nostrils.

Uses

Shea butter can be found in many high-end moisturizing skin products. Shea butter is known for its skin softening effect. It is also used in hair conditioners to add and maintain moisture in dry brittle hair, in addition to retaining softness and preventing breakage.

Lavender Butter-

Lavender Butter is actually an extract of whole Lavandula angustifolia

(Lavender) flowers using a Sweet Almond Oil/Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil mix which produces a smooth, velvety “butter” at room temperature that smells of fresh growing lavender.  Lavender butter produces soothing, calming, and

near sedative effects. It contains nopreservatives or coloring agents.

 Mined in France this clay is rich in minerals, improves skin softness, heals, disinfects, and is great for tissue firming, Pink Argiletz clay is very beneficial to all skin types especially maturing skins.

Sunflower Oil -

 Sunflower oil is high in essential fatty acids and vitamin E. It helps to moisturize, regenerate and condition the skin. Sunflower oil is especially useful for mature, sensitive, dry or damaged skin.

Organic Olive Oil-

Olive Oil is and is recommended for babies and others with very sensitive skin. Olive oil attracts external moisture, holds it close to the skin, and forms a breathable film, which prevents loss of internal moisture, permits the skin to properly release sweat, shed dead skin and release sebum. Olive oil is a good skin cell regenerator and helps to sooth inflamed skin.

Grape Seed Oil-

Grape Seed oil is a light oil absorbed quickly by the skin and is rich in vitamin E, minerals, linoleic acid and other essential fatty acids like Omega 6. Grape Seed oil is a nourishing addition to any bath and body product and is intended for dry, damaged or aging skin. Grape Seed oil is known for it’s astringent, skin tightening properties.

Grape seed is an ingredient that not only works to prevent and repair sun damage, it also promotes healing, and increases skin elasticity. When all of its properties are combined is becomes an excellent choice for sun care.

Pomegranate Extract-

Research suggests that common fruit extracts may have significant clinical benefits in decreasing risk for skin cancer.

These studies were presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Second Annual International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research.

Pomegrante extract can be a good choice for both before and after UV exposure. It has powerful antioxidant properties, and has been shown to reduce cancerous changes after over-exposure to the sun.

 Growing up near the cranberry bogs in New Jersey, I have always remembered the natural beauty of the bogs. These organiccaly grown cranberry seeds are added to my homemade sugar scrubs for an invigorating exfolliant. These tiny seeds are a beautiful red. Cranberry seeds are a very important ingredient for me in my formulas.

Acai Berry Powder-

 The Acai ( ah-sigh-EE ) Berry grows in the Amazon Rainforest. They have been widely recognized for their anti-oxidant properties. Acai berries has Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, B-Complex, Iron and Omega fatty acids. This little purple berry contains a combination of vitamins and minerals that has a higher content than any other anti aging products on the market.

Known as "The Fountain of Youth". skin care products that contain Acai berries contain life giving nutrients that could help stop skin degeneration to reverse the signs of aging, and help in cellular repair and protection. Acai berry give a healthier look to skin, soften the appearance of fine lines and unwanted wrinkles.

Vegatable Stearic Acid (derived from soybeans)

We only use Stearic acid that is derived  from soybeans. It is a waxy solid. A colorless, odorless, waxlike fatty acid, occurring in natural vegetable fats and used in making soaps, lotions and scrubs, along with many other beauty products.

Emulsifying Wax-

Emulsifying wax is one of the essential ingredients in making lotions and creams. Lotions and creams are created from a mixture of water and oils. Without the addition of emulsifying wax, they too would separate back into water and oils. Non-botanical ingredient. This particular emulsifying wax is NF (National Formulary) approved and is the global choice for emulsifying compounds. The emulsifying wax used by DIRTY GODDESS LOTIONS  is plant based, as per our commitment to abstain from offering any products derived from animal ingredients.

Polysorbate 20-

 Excellent oil in water emulsifier/solubilizer. New, nontoxic emulsifier, to dissolve your precious essential oils into water, without the use of alcohol. Polysorbate 20 is not an organic product. However, it is derived from Lauric Acid (from Coconut Oil).

Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol

A paraben and formaldehyde-free preservative used in our lotions.
